Or so we thought.
The 20th century delivered a series of shocks to this confidence. Kurt Gödel proved that any sufficiently complex formal system contains statements that are true but unprovable within that system and that no system can prove its own consistency. Mathematicians discovered that Euclidean geometry, treated as absolute truth for two millennia, was just one geometry among many. Non-Euclidean geometries are equally valid. Set theorists found that different axioms produce different, incompatible mathematics, with no "fact of the matter" about which is correct.
Even in the domain of pure abstraction, perfect certainty, and timeless truth, boundaries appear. Different formal systems, different geometric frameworks, different logical foundations; each valid within its domain, each encountering limits where it must give way to alternatives. Mathematics itself is stratified.
This is the most surprising application of contextual stratification. If even certainty has context, if even proof has boundaries, if even logic depends on axioms chosen, then the principle truly is universal. Let's see how deep it goes.

"Then is mathematics just arbitrary? Can we choose any axioms?"
No. Several constraints apply:

Understanding mathematics as stratified changes how we do and teach it:

- Recognize axiom choices as field definitions. Changing axioms doesn't invalidate previous work. It explores a different F.
